Launch-day safety pass
Run the same short inspection every time so the important items are not left to memory. This checklist is written for recreational fishing trips and should be paired with current federal, state, local, and vessel-specific requirements.
Required gear check
- Confirm every person has a properly sized, serviceable, readily accessible U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
- Confirm throwable flotation, sound signaling device, navigation lights, fire extinguisher, visual distress signals, and registration documents when they apply to the vessel and waterway.
- Check the engine cut-off switch link on boats where it is installed and required.
- Keep a first aid kit, knife, flashlight or headlamp, drinking water, sunscreen, and a dry backup layer where they can be reached quickly.
Boat and trailer check
- Install the drain plug before backing down the ramp.
- Test the bilge pump, battery charge, navigation lights, trailer lights, winch strap, safety chains, tire pressure, wheel hubs, and tie-downs.
- Open storage hatches before launching and look for fuel odor, loose gear, water intrusion, or anything that shifted during towing.
- Stow rods, nets, coolers, anchors, and tackle so nobody steps on hooks or fights loose gear while boarding.
Weather, water, and people plan
- Check an official marine forecast and look at wind, lightning, visibility, tide or river stage, ramp exposure, and the return route.
- Tell someone ashore where you are launching, who is aboard, where you expect to fish, and when you expect to return.
- Pick a conservative turnaround time before the trip starts.
- Keep emergency contacts, local dispatch, marina, tow service, and ramp names available offline.
